A new survey from Automatic Trap Company has uncovered some alarming gaps in awareness around rodent control.
For children under six, rodenticides are the most common reason for pesticide-related visits to healthcare facilities and the second leading cause of pesticide-related hospitalization. Poison control centers receive between 12,000 and 15,000 reports annually of rodenticide exposures in young children.

According to the survey, 93.3% of Americans don’t know that there is no antidote for most rat and mouse poisons (also known as rodenticides).

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports that more than 100 pets die annually from rodenticide exposure, making it the most frequent cause of pet poisoning.

Our survey also found that 28.7% of Americans know a pet that has been sickened or killed after coming into contact with these poisons.

Rodenticides don’t stop with the pests they’re meant to kill. Predatory animals like owls, hawks, and foxes often suffer from secondary poisoning after consuming rodents that have already ingested poison.
As Blair Calder, President of Automatic Trap Company, explains:
“Rodenticides—especially anticoagulant varieties—cause prolonged, painful suffering in pets that ingest the bait directly, while wildlife falls victim through secondary poisoning. These toxins accumulate in predators, leading to bleeding, organ failure, and death. There are safer, more effective alternatives that protect kids, pets, and wildlife.”
The good news? There are effective, non-toxic ways to control rodent populations without putting your loved ones—or the environment—at risk.
Choose safer pest control options such as self-resetting automatic traps, exclusion methods, and natural deterrents.
Avoid rodenticides whenever possible.
Raise awareness among neighbors, landlords, and community groups, since rodenticide risks extend far beyond a single household.
Self-resetting automatic traps offer a powerful alternative to poisons:
Automatic Operation: Ready 24/7 with minimal maintenance, so you don’t need to constantly reset traps.
Non-Toxic and Humane: Avoids the risks of poison, glue boards, and snap traps—safe for kids, pets, and the environment.
Durable and Adaptable: Built to last and easy to install in a variety of environments.
